Berlin Fire Department on Böllern: Tighten up on sales - Berlin bans fireworks in four zones to curb New Year’s Eve risks
Berlin’s fire brigade is pushing for tighter controls on firework sales ahead of New Year’s Eve. Authorities have already set up four no-firework zones across the city, including Alexanderplatz and Steinmetzkiez. The move comes as officials highlight the risks of misuse and injuries during celebrations.
The fire brigade has long advocated for stricter regulations on firework sales. In 2022, they proposed expanding firework-free areas, though final decisions rest with the Berlin Senate Department for the Interior and Sport. These zones follow federal laws under the Sprengstoffgesetz (Explosives Act), which allows local bans.
Past experience shows that designated firework-free zones have reduced incidents. This year, four key areas—Alexanderplatz, Steinmetzkiez, part of Sonnenallee, and Admiralbrücke—will remain off-limits for fireworks. The brigade also urges residents to buy only certified products and read instructions carefully before use.
Safety advice includes avoiding loose fireworks in pockets, where sparks could cause burns. The brigade strongly warns against touching lit fireworks, even if they appear to have failed. Any form of regulation, from sales limits to clearer warnings, is seen as a step toward safer celebrations.
The fire brigade’s recommendations aim to cut down on accidents and illegal use. With four no-firework zones now in place, officials hope for a safer New Year’s Eve. Residents are reminded to follow guidelines and handle fireworks with caution.
