Berlin Blackout: Anarchists Attack Power Pylons, 50,000 Affected
Overnight, an attack on high-voltage pylons in southeast Berlin caused a blackout affecting around 50,000 households. The incident also disrupted public transport and left many citizens, including those in care homes, without power. The CEO of Stromnetz Berlin warned that repairs may take several days.
The attack, which involved setting fire to two pylons, was claimed by 'Some Anarchists' on the left-wing scene portal Indymedia. They stated that the target was a technology park in Berlin-Adlershof, aiming to disrupt 'sensitive supercomputers' and processes, and to 'cut off the power to the military-industrial complex'. The police suspect political motivation and are investigating possible connections to various groups.
The attack damaged power cables, causing significant disruption. Trams and S-bahns were unable to run, and traffic light systems failed. Many residents, including those in care homes requiring ventilation, had to be transferred to hospitals. The police warned of potential failures of the emergency number 112 and advised people to contact local police or fire stations directly in case of urgent emergencies.
The perpetrator behind the attack remains unidentified. The police are continuing their investigation into possible connections to various groups and political motivations. Meanwhile, aid organizations are preparing to be deployed for several days to assist in the recovery effort. The attack has highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and the potential impact of such incidents on citizens' daily lives.
