Berlin Boosts Emergency Overnight Places Ahead of Cold Weather

Berlin is gearing up for the cold weather with an expected increase in emergency overnight places. By November, at least 949 places will be available, up from an average of 1,071 last season. Charitable organizations are coordinating measures to prevent homelessness during this period.

The cold relief season in Berlin runs from October 1st to April 30th, with additional places provided in particularly cold winter months. The German Red Cross's warmth bus will operate daily from 6:00 PM to midnight from November 1st until the end of March. Around 6,000 people in Berlin are living completely without accommodation, and as of January 31, 2025, there were 53,610 people in Berlin housed in various emergency accommodations and aid offers.

Coordinated measures to prevent homelessness include approximately 720 shelter places coordinated by the Kältehilfe (Cold Aid) coordination office in cooperation with the Senate Administration. Low-threshold social advisory centers, street outreach social work, and practical support projects like mobile toilet care and community caretakers in neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg are also in operation.

With the increase in emergency overnight places and coordinated measures to prevent homelessness, Berlin is better prepared for the common cold weather. However, welfare associations continue to call for a focus on preventing homelessness as the colder weather begins.
