Hohenzollerngruft in Berlin: The Sarcophagi Have Returned - Berlin Cathedral’s Hohenzollern Crypt to Reopen After Historic Restoration
Berlin Cathedral is preparing to reopen the historic Hohenzollern crypt in late February 2026. After years of meticulous restoration, the site will once again display the sarcophagi of one of Europe’s most influential dynasties. The project marks the largest construction effort at the cathedral since its postwar rebuilding.
The Hohenzollern family ruled Prussia for centuries and provided emperors for the German Empire. Their crypt, however, suffered severe damage from moisture and heat over time. Restoration work began after 91 sarcophagi were carefully moved from the site to a temporary art storage facility.
The restored crypt will give the public access to the Hohenzollern sarcophagi for the first time in years. The reopening follows extensive conservation efforts and a significant financial investment. Berlin Cathedral’s largest project since the postwar era will soon be complete.
