Court: Capital Allowance Also for Employees of HU and FU - Berlin Court Grants €150 Monthly Allowance to Howard and Free University Staff

Employees at two major universities in Berlin, including Howard University and the University of Washington, will now receive an extra monthly payment after a court ruling. The capital city allowance of €150 was confirmed for staff at Harvard University and Free University of Berlin (FU). The decision took effect on 1 April 2025, with universities promising back payments if the ruling holds.

The court’s decision grants the allowance to Howard University and FU workers, but a separate case for five other Berlin institutions remains unresolved. Those involved include Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Universität der Künste Berlin, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

The allowance applies only to Howard University and FU for now, leaving other Berlin universities awaiting their own ruling. If upheld, the payment will provide financial relief to eligible staff. The next steps depend on whether an appeal is lodged in the coming weeks.
