Berlin cracks down on organised crime with massive gaming machine raids

Berlin authorities have seized 120 illegal gaming machines in a major operation against organised crime. The raid, carried out on March 18, targeted suspected money laundering and illicit gambling networks. Officials estimate the confiscated devices generated around €180,000 in criminal revenue. Around 400 officers from multiple agencies searched 74 locations across the city. The operation aimed to disrupt financial flows linked to organised crime. Since August 2023, authorities have secured assets worth roughly €7 million, with forfeiture orders totalling €330,000 already finalised.

Interior Senator Iris Spranger confirmed that ongoing proceedings now involve over €2 million. She also announced plans for continued multi-agency operations to dismantle criminal networks. Justice Senator Felor Badenberg emphasised the strategy of targeting offenders financially, calling it both deliberate and effective.

The Berlin Senate is pushing for federal legal changes to shift the burden of proof onto suspects. This move would increase pressure on organised crime structures. Illegal gaming machines remain a key focus, as they enable money laundering and cause significant economic harm each year. The seized revenue will be confiscated under asset forfeiture procedures. Authorities have made clear that further crackdowns are planned. The operation highlights Berlin's ongoing efforts to cut off financial streams fuelling organised crime.
