Berlin flag theft escalates into violent chase and assault in Köpenick
Incident No. 0429
Witnesses alerted police to an altercation in Köpenick yesterday afternoon. Around 12:15 p.m., several people were operating an information booth for a political party at the intersection of Bahnhofstraße and Seelenbinderstraße when a man allegedly snatched a party flag as he walked past and fled down Seelenbinderstraße.
According to reports, a 19-year-old party member and three companions—aged 35, 52, and 55—caught up with the suspect at the intersection of Seelenbinderstraße and Langerhansstraße to demand the flag's return. During the ensuing confrontation, the suspect, who had reportedly dropped the flag by then, is said to have shoved both the 19-year-old and the 55-year-old, leaving the younger man with a knee injury.
Responding officers arrested the 32-year-old suspect, who was visibly intoxicated. A breathalyzer test recorded a blood alcohol level of approximately 0.20%. After police processing, the man was released. The case, involving suspicion of theft and assault, has been referred to the State Protection Unit of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office.
