Berlin Football Match Ends in Violence: Several Injured, Game Abandoned
A local amateur football match in Berlin's Gesundbrunnen district ended in chaos yesterday, with a violent altercation leaving several players injured and the game abandoned. Incident No. 0539 involved a 25-year-old visiting player being punched while celebrating a goal, sparking a brawl that saw multiple individuals sustain injuries.
The incident began when a 25-year-old visiting player was struck in the face by a 26-year-old opponent during a goal celebration. The visiting team's 36-year-old coach then verbally abused a 24-year-old home player, who responded by spitting in the coach's face and making threats. The situation escalated further when a 37-year-old visiting team member punched a 22-year-old home player en route to the changing rooms.
Several players were injured in the melee. A 25-year-old suffered facial bruising, a split lip, and jaw pain, while a 33-year-old, a 24-year-old, and a 22-year-old all sustained facial bruising. The accused claimed self-defense, stating he was suddenly attacked. All injured individuals declined medical treatment.
Police detained the 37-year-old for processing before releasing him, while the other suspects were let go at the scene. Local detectives, led by Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Horn, have taken over the investigation. The incident has cast a shadow over the local amateur football scene, with the match abandoned and the true cause of the altercation still under investigation.
