Green MP Altug to switch to SPD - Berlin Green Party lawmaker defects to SPD over leadership and policy disputes

Turgut Altug, a long-serving Green Party member and Berlin state lawmaker, has resigned from his party and its parliamentary group. The 60-year-old, who has represented Kreuzberg since 2011, plans to join the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in early December. Raed Saleh, leader of the SPD's parliamentary group, has welcomed Altug's likely arrival.

Altug, who has been a Green Party member since 2006, cited several reasons for his departure. He criticized the party for losing touch with the everyday realities of Berliners and accused the leadership of governing with an authoritarian hand. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the party's proximity to Die Linke and the lack of space for debate.

Altug's expertise in biodiversity and nature conservation, honed during his time as the Green Party's spokesperson for nature conservation, would strengthen the SPD's work in these areas. Raed Saleh, leader of the SPD's parliamentary group, looks forward to Altug's contributions, likely starting in early December.

Turgut Altug's resignation from the Green Party and his planned move to the SPD signals a significant shift in Berlin's political landscape. With his extensive experience and expertise, Altug is expected to bring valuable insights to the SPD's parliamentary group, particularly in the realm of nature conservation.
