Berlin's Greens elect top candidates and party leaders - Berlin Greens to pick 2026 election candidate and new leadership this weekend
Berlin’s Green Party is preparing for key decisions this weekend. On Saturday, members will choose their top candidate for the 2026 election and vote on party leadership. The conference, starting at 11:00 AM, will shape the party’s direction for the coming years.
The state executive board has already nominated Werner Graf as the leading candidate for the Greens. If the party wins the September 2026 election, Graf—currently the parliamentary group leader—could become Berlin’s mayor, taking office in the Red City Hall.
Graf will run alongside Bettina Jarasch, forming the Greens’ top duo for the campaign. The party will also elect its co-chairs at the same event.
Nina Stahr and Philmon Ghirmai are seeking re-election as dual leaders. The pair took over in December 2023, following Susanne Mertens, who co-chaired with Ghirmai from 2021 to 2023. Stahr previously held the role from 2016 to 2021, working alongside Graf during that time.
The weekend’s decisions will set the Greens’ course for the next election cycle. Graf’s potential mayoral candidacy and the leadership votes will determine the party’s strategy ahead of the 2026 poll. The results are expected to influence Berlin’s political landscape in the years to come.
