Greens push for affordable rents and improved public transport - Berlin Greens unveil bold 2026 election manifesto to tackle housing crisis

The Green Party in Berlin has revealed its 125-page manifesto for the 2026 state elections. Titled 'Change Politics, Stay Berlin', the platform outlines ambitious plans to reshape housing, transport, and environmental policies across the capital. Co-lead candidates Werner Graf and Bettina Jarasch will campaign on these proposals, aiming to challenge the current governing coalition.

The party's housing strategy takes centre stage in the manifesto. It includes measures like promoting housing cooperatives, restricting holiday rentals, and enforcing an 'Affordable Rents Act'. This law would require landlords with 50 or more properties to allocate a fixed share of units at below-market rates. Graf stressed that Berlin's housing crisis demands urgent action, arguing the manifesto provides concrete solutions.

The Greens will now take their proposals to voters ahead of the 2026 election. If implemented, the policies would mark a significant shift in Berlin's approach to housing affordability, public services, and environmental regulation. The party's success at the ballot box will determine whether these plans move forward.
