Berlin: Arrests and Raids After Theft of Handball Championship Trophy - Berlin handball trophy theft leads to arrests and gold seizure
Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft of a championship trophy from a Berlin handball club. The trophy, belonging to Handball-Bundesliga team Füchse Berlin, was stolen from their office at Gendarmenmarkt in November. Police have since seized gold, cash, and other evidence linked to the case.
The first suspect, a 41-year-old German man, was arrested and remains in pretrial detention. A second suspect, a 62-year-old German man, was taken into custody but later released after questioning.
Authorities carried out multiple searches across Berlin and Brandenburg. They recovered gold worth a low six-figure sum, €15,000 in cash, a melted-down silver ingot, and a smelting furnace. Police in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also conducted related operations. Investigators believe the evidence may link the suspects to other burglaries. The arrests came nearly two months after the trophy was stolen from Füchse Berlin’s offices.
The 41-year-old suspect remains in custody while the investigation continues. Police are analysing the seized items for further connections to unsolved crimes. The trophy theft case remains under active investigation.
