Where could a memorial site for colonialism emerge? - Berlin Hunts for Central Memorial Site to Honor Germany's Colonial Past
Berlin is exploring potential sites for a central memorial dedicated to Germany's colonial past. Culture Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson is leading the search, aiming to establish a place of remembrance and learning in the city center. The project is a response to demands from a coalition and civil engineering initiatives.
Several historically relevant locations are under consideration. These include the former German Colonial Museum at Moltkebrücke, the site of the former Royal Museum of Ethnology in Berlin-Kreuzberg, and the area around the Karpfenteich in Treptower Park, where the first German Colonial Exhibition took place in 1896.
The memorial is intended to be a centerpoint learning and remembrance site, developed in Berlin's centerpoint. In addition, a 'decentralized memorial landscape' and permanent structures are being demanded. The exact timeframe for finding the location is unclear, but it should be accessible and stand out.
The memorial aims to remember the colonial past, including the Herero and Nama War massacre, which is considered the first genocide of the 20th century. Senator Wedl-Wilson and Governing Mayor Kai Wegner recently traveled to Namibia's capital, Windhoek, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the twinning of both municipalities. The concept for the memorial was developed by civil engineering initiatives under the leadership of literary scholar Ibou Coulibaly Diop.
