Berlin launches 24/7 document pickup boxes for IDs and passports
Berlin has introduced its first 24-hour document collection box at the Eichborndamm Citizen Service Center in Reinickendorf. The new service allows residents to pick up ID cards and passports—or return old ones—without needing an appointment. This marks the start of a wider rollout of the document collection service across the city.
The project is a collaboration between the Senate Chancellery and the Reinickendorf District Office. It aims to make administrative tasks more convenient by offering round-the-clock access to document collection boxes. A second box will soon open in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, with further expansions planned.
The Bundesdruckerei, which issues the documents, will oversee the system’s expansion to other districts. Residents no longer need to wait for office hours or book slots to retrieve essential paperwork. The service simplifies processes for both new and expired documents.
The Reinickendorf box is now operational, with Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg set to follow. Additional districts will adopt the document collection service in the coming months. The move reduces wait times and streamlines access to official documents for Berliners.
