Berlin Marks German Unity Day With Mosque Openings, Free Museum Tours, and Film Festival Launch
Berlin and Brandenburg are marking German Unity Day with a variety of cultural events. Over 20 mosques are opening their doors to visitors, while the German Historical Museum offers free tours exploring German identity. Meanwhile, the first Mubi Film Festival in Berlin is set to begin with a red carpet event.
The Day of the Mosques, held on October 3rd, allows visitors to explore Berlin's diverse Islamic culture. This event coincides with the city festival in Teltow, celebrating 35 years of German unity with performances by Westbam and Frank Schöbel.
The German Historical Museum's free guided tours delve into the exhibition 'Roads not Taken', questioning the concept of a 'German fatherland'. This event is part of the festival week 'Der Tag der Clubkultur', which focuses on reunification this year and features over a hundred events until October 12th.
On the same day, Mubi kicks off its first film festival in Berlin with a red carpet event. Although the directors' names are not yet known, the festival will showcase films by Wim Wenders and Kelly Reichardt. Additionally, Mark Reeder's 'B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989' will be screened at Event-Space Kwia on the Maybachufer.
While the main celebrations for German Unity Day take place in the Saarland, Berlin and Brandenburg offer a rich programme of cultural events. From exploring Islamic culture and German identity to enjoying film screenings and music performances, there's something for everyone to celebrate this historic day.
