Berlin names first Senate advocate for Germans from Russia and expellees
Berlin has appointed Walter Gauks as its first Senate representative for Germans from Russia, late resettlers, and expellees. Gauks, a late resettler himself, will advocate for these groups at state and federal levels and collaborate with supporting organizations.
Gauks brings a wealth of experience to the role, having dedicated his life to the social engagement and integration of Germans from Russia. He has led organizations promoting integration, co-founded youth groups, and initiated projects like 'Erinnerungsnaht' and 'Wir gemeinsam'.
His priorities include improving participation, support, legal recognition, combating old-age poverty, and labor market integration. He aims to shift societal perceptions of these groups, often seen as outsiders in Berlin society, and address their concerns and hardships. Gauks will work closely with the Bund der Vertriebenen (BdV), the Landsmannschaft der Deutschen aus Russland (LMDR), and other organizations representing these groups in Berlin.
Walter Gauks' appointment signals Berlin's commitment to supporting Germans from Russia, late resettlers, and expellees. His experience and dedication promise a strong voice for these communities at the state and federal levels.
