Berlin police arrest suspect after late-night cellar burglary spree in historic apartment building
A 28-year-old man is in custody after a suspected cellar burglary in Berlin's Tiergarten district late last night. The arrest follows multiple basement storage unit break-ins at an old apartment building on Kurfürstenstraße.
The suspect was apprehended by an off-duty police officer who detained him until uniformed units arrived. Witnesses, including a 65-year-old resident, reported seeing the suspect and an accomplice leaving a basement with a suitcase around 12:30 AM.
Police recovered the discarded suitcase, which contained suspected stolen goods and burglary tools. The suspect was then transferred to the precinct station of Police District 28 for further investigation. Previous basement lockers in the same old building had been broken, with no identified perpetrators until now.
The 28-year-old suspect is expected to appear before an investigating magistrate for a potential arrest warrant. The police are continuing their investigation and appealing for any further witnesses to come forward.
