Berlin police hunt West Bank man after New Year’s crash injures child
Berlin police are searching for a 23-year-old man from the West Bank in connection with a New Year’s Day traffic accident on Oranienburger Straße in Wittenau. The incident, which injured several people—including a critically hurt seven-year-old boy—also involved the use of a pyrotechnic device in a crowded area just after midnight. Authorities have seized the vehicle and are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information.
The accident took place in the early hours of January 1, when a black Volkswagen driven by a man or teenager veered off course, striking four trees and a traffic sign before coming to rest on a bike lane. Oranienburger Straße was closed between 8:50 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., causing disruptions to BVG public transport services in the area.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police focusing on locating the suspect and gathering further evidence. The closure of Oranienburger Straße and the injuries sustained by multiple individuals, including a child in critical condition, have heightened the urgency of the case. Authorities continue to encourage the public to assist by providing any relevant details.
