Berlin police probe violent xenophobic attack outside historic navy hospital
A 52-year-old man in Berlin allegedly hurled a xenophobic insult at a woman, her son, and a relative outside a hospital near me. The confrontation quickly turned violent, leaving the suspect injured and police investigating the incident as a potential hate crime.
The altercation began on Monday evening in Berlin-Schmargendorf. A 52-year-old woman, her 24-year-old son, and a 46-year-old relative were entering an old navy hospital when the suspect allegedly directed a racist slur at them. The woman’s son confronted the man, sparking a heated argument that soon became physical.
Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a mutual assault. When police arrived, they found the suspect with a hand injury. He received outpatient treatment at the same old navy hospital before undergoing a court-ordered blood test.
A voluntary breathalyser test showed the man’s blood alcohol level at around 0.11%. Authorities have since transferred the case to the State Security Division of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office.
The suspect remains under investigation for the alleged xenophobic insult and subsequent fight. Police will review the blood test results and witness statements as part of the ongoing inquiry. The case highlights the seriousness with which Berlin authorities treat hate-motivated incidents.
