Berlin police probe xenophobic attack on three young women in Wedding district
A 46-year-old man in Berlin’s Wedding district allegedly launched a xenophobic attack against three young women on Wednesday evening. The incident, which involved anti-Muslim slurs and threatening behaviour, has now been referred to the State Criminal Police Office’s extremism and hate crime unit for deeper investigation.
The confrontation began as the three women—aged 18, 21, and 24—walked past a 39-year-old man who was shouting loudly. Two of the women were wearing headscarves. The man reportedly started following them while hurling verbal abuse.
A bystander stepped in, placing himself between the women and the aggressor. This intervention caused the suspect to retreat to his nearby apartment. Police from the 17th precinct later located the man at his home and conducted a voluntary breathalyzer test, which recorded a blood alcohol level just under 0.1%. After identification and questioning, the suspect was released from custody. Authorities have since escalated the case to specialised investigators due to the nature of the allegations.
The women involved were unharmed, but the incident has prompted further scrutiny under hate crime protocols. The State Criminal Police Office will now examine the evidence to determine whether charges will be filed against the 46-year-old suspect.
