Berlin police scandal erupts as officers cover up theft and fake traffic stop
Berlin authorities have launched a major investigation into a group of police officers suspected of covering up a theft and staging a fake traffic stop. Raids were carried out today on twelve officers, with one senior officer arrested on robbery charges. The case centres on a stolen gold coin and a later cash heist involving both the accused thief and his victim. The scandal began in December 2021 when a 45-year-old senior officer allegedly stole gold coins worth at least €600 from a colleague's locker. DNA evidence and statements made to his wife reportedly support his involvement. Instead of reporting the crime, twelve officers are accused of knowing about it and staying silent.
Today's raids, led by Berlin's State Criminal Police Office on behalf of the Public Prosecutor's Office, targeted these twelve employees. Mobile phones were seized for further examination. No additional officers beyond those already searched are currently under suspicion. The investigation expanded after the same senior officer and his victim—another police employee—allegedly staged a fake traffic stop in August 2023. During this incident, over €57,000 in cash and two mobile phones were stolen. The arrested officer now faces charges related to both the original theft and the later robbery. Administrative disciplinary actions are being considered as the inquiry continues.
The case remains under active investigation, with authorities examining evidence from seized devices and witness statements. Disciplinary measures could follow for those found to have obstructed justice. The outcome may also impact internal police procedures and accountability measures.
