Berlin police uncover weapons and explosives in ex-officer's home raid

Police in Berlin carried out a search at the home of a 61-year-old former officer on Monday. The operation took place in the Lichterfelde district, where authorities uncovered a cache of weapons and explosives. Investigators have since confirmed the seized items did not pose an immediate threat to the public. The search began at around 11 a.m., led by officers from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office. Inside the apartment on Chlumer Straße, they found multiple loaded firearms, ammunition, and gun accessories stored improperly. The haul also included hand grenades, explosive devices, knives, pistol magazines, and pepper spray.

Bomb disposal experts from the Criminal Technical Institute examined the items. Their assessment confirmed that, despite their dangerous nature, the materials did not create an urgent risk. The case has now been handed over to a specialist unit within Directorate 4 (South) for deeper investigation. No official nationwide statistics exist on similar incidents involving former police officers in recent years. While isolated cases have been reported in the media, each is typically handled individually through police probes and court proceedings.

The former officer's residence yielded a significant number of illegal items, all of which have been confiscated. The investigation will continue under the specialist unit's oversight. Authorities have not yet released further details about potential charges or the former officer's background.
