Berlin Police's 2024: Road Safety Efforts Amid Rising Fatalities
Berlin Police have been actively working to improve road safety and community engagement in 2024. They participated in the 50th Senior Citizens’ Week, ensured school route safety, and tackled improper parking. However, the year also saw a concerning rise in road fatalities.
The police engaged with the community through 19 events during the Senior Citizens’ Week, under the motto 'Shaping the Future Together'. They also took significant steps to ensure safety on school routes, implementing over 400 actions ahead of the September school start.
In their efforts to maintain order, Berlin Police relocated 68,421 improperly parked cars throughout the year. Despite these initiatives, the city faced a worrying increase in road fatalities, with 55 deaths recorded – the second-highest figure in a decade.
Alarmingly, nearly 49% of these fatalities involved seniors, and 64% affected cyclists and pedestrians. The number of injured individuals in traffic accidents also rose marginally to 16,480. The leading causes of accidents remained unchanged: turning errors, failure to yield, excessive speed, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Berlin Police conducted 2,865 traffic checks targeting speeding offenses to curb these issues. However, the total number of traffic accidents decreased slightly by 0.57% compared to the previous year.
While Berlin Police have shown commitment to community engagement and road safety initiatives, the high number of road fatalities and injuries in 2024, particularly among seniors and vulnerable road users, underscores the need for continued and enhanced efforts to improve road safety in the city.
