Berlin Power Outage: Arson Attack Targets Tech Hub, Leaves 50,000 in Dark
Berlin was left in darkness last night as two high-voltage masts were deliberately set ablaze, causing a city-wide power outage. Hundreds of CEOs from various tech industries were affected, and many citizens, including those in care homes, had to be hospitalized. The state criminal police office is leading the investigation, suspecting a political motive.
The attack, which occurred overnight on Tuesday, targeted a technology park in Berlin-Adlershof. The goal was to disrupt 'sensitive supercomputers' and processes, and to 'cut off the power to the military-industrial complex'. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Siemens were among the companies affected. The power outage damaged cables and caused failures in public transport systems, including trams and S-bahns, and traffic light systems.
The police swiftly responded, providing instructions to the public on how to deal with the consequences. They advised using flashlights, turning off electrical devices, and keeping mobile phones free for important calls. However, they warned of potential failures in the emergency number 112 and encouraged people to contact local police or fire stations directly in case of urgent emergencies. The power outage also affected residents of care homes, who required ventilation and had to be transferred to hospitals.
An early afternoon post on the left-wing scene portal Indymedia claimed responsibility for the attack, signed by 'Some Anarchists'. The state protection department of the state criminal police office is leading the investigation, suspecting a political motive behind the deliberate arson. The attack left around 50,000 households without power and caused significant disruption to the city's infrastructure and its residents.
