Protesters Demonstrate Against Expansion of A100 - Berlin Protests: Hundreds Demand A100 Motorway Expansion Halt

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Berlin to voice their opposition to the further expansion of the A100 motorway. The demonstration, organized by the 'A100 wegbassen' alliance, saw participants gather from various points across the city before converging on the recently opened 16th section of the motorway, which has been causing frequent traffic jams and confusion around the Treptow exit.

The protest was led by the 'A100 wegbassen' alliance, a collective of several associations and initiatives including the Changing Cities association, BUND Berlin, Fridays for Future Berlin, and the Clubcommission Berlin. Despite organizers estimating the number of participants in the thousands, police put the figure at around 500. The protesters demanded an immediate halt to the expansion of the A100, a climate-friendly mobility transition, and a moratorium on the construction of new motorways.

Critics fear that the expansion of the motorway will lead to even more traffic, despite ongoing construction work on the Elsenbrücke. The protest comes amidst growing concern about the environmental impact of the A100 expansion and the need for a shift towards more sustainable forms of transportation. The identity of the founder or founders of the 'A100 wegbassen' alliance remains unclear, with Tobias Trommer only identified as the founder of the broader 'Aktionsbündnis A100 stoppen!' campaign.

The protest highlights the growing discontent among Berlin residents regarding the environmental impact of the A100 expansion. While the organizers and exact number of participants differ, the message remains clear: a significant portion of the public wants a halt to the expansion and a shift towards more climate-friendly mobility options. The identity of the 'A100 wegbassen' alliance's founder remains unknown, but their efforts have sparked a conversation about the city's transportation future.
