Berlin Publisher's Prize: These Buildings Were Honored - Berlin Publishing Prize 2024 Celebrates Bold Independent Voices in Literature
The Berlin Publishing Prize has been awarded since 2018, honouring innovative, small, and independent publishers. This year, the prize was given to several young and innovative publishing houses, including März Verlag, who received the Grand Prize worth €26,000. Two additional prizes, each worth €15,000, went to BeBra Verlag and Kraus Verlag.
The Berlin Publishing Prize is an initiative of the Senate Departments for Culture and Economic Affairs. It aims to recognise and support small publishers who contribute to open public discourse. This year's jury praised März Verlag for producing books that engage with the political present and its contradictions, earning them the Grand Prize. The jury also highlighted the importance of independent publishers in fostering a vibrant democracy, diversity, freedom, and creativity, especially in uncertain times. Economic Senator Franziska Giffey (SPD) and Cultural Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson both emphasised the significance of the prize and the role of publishers in society.
The Berlin Publishing Prize continues to recognise and support innovative, independent publishers. This year's winners, including März Verlag, BeBra Verlag, and Kraus Verlag, demonstrate the diversity and vibrancy of the publishing scene in Berlin. The prize, worth a total of €56,000 this year, reflects the commitment of the Senate Departments to supporting and promoting open public discourse and cultural diversity.
