Berlin Renames Street After World's First Female Rabbi, Regina Jonas
Berlin-Kreuzberg's Kohlfurter Straße is set to be renamed Regina Jonas Straße, honouring the world's first female rabbi who worked nearby and was tragically murdered in Auschwitz. The renaming, initially decided in December 2023, faced delays but is now expected to be inaugurated in December 2025.
Regina Jonas, ordained in 1935, dedicated her life to pastoral care and religious instruction in Berlin. Her legacy lives on, with the street she once served near being renamed in her honour. Previously known as Britzer Straße, it became Kohlfurter Straße in 1949. The district assembly's decision to rename it Regina Jonas Straße was approved by the district office in May 2024. Despite initial objections, no lawsuits were filed, allowing the process to resume. The renaming could now realistically take place before the end of 2024, with an inauguration ceremony planned for December that year.
The renaming of Kohlfurter Straße to Regina Jonas Straße is a poignant tribute to Regina Jonas, the world's first ordained female rabbi. It serves as a reminder of her significant contributions and the tragic fate she suffered. The upcoming inauguration ceremony will honour her memory and legacy.
