Berlin Residents Protest Gentrification, Demand Say in Neighborhood Planning

Berlin's Friedrichshain district saw around 200 residents unite on Saturday to protest gentrification, specifically opposing high-rise projects they fear will price long-term locals out of their homes. The demonstration, organized by the alliance 'Berlin against gentrification', targeted the opaque actions of Senator for Urban Development Christian Gebler (SPD) and investor meetings planned for October 16.

The alliance aims to empower residents with the principle 'No planning in the neighborhood without us'. The demonstration started at the backside of the S-Bahn station Warschauer Straße, with participants expressing their rejection of high-rise plans that could bring unaffordable apartments to the area. The Anschutz Entertainment Group's proposed high-rise over the pedestrian bridge between the S- and U-Bahn station is one such project under fire.

Residents have formed initiatives like 'Kiez without Klotz' to counter these developments. They criticize the lack of transparency and consultation in planning processes, feeling disempowered by Gebler's actions. Activists plan another rally on October 16th at 5 pm at Rotherstraße 8 in the Rudolfkiez to protest an investor meeting, with Atrium Development GmbH's high-rise project at Rudolfstraße 18/19 also drawing opposition.

The demonstration highlights residents' concerns about gentrification and their desire for a say in neighborhood planning. With more protests planned, the issue remains a hot topic in Friedrichshain. The alliance 'Berlin against gentrification' continues to fight for affordable housing and against displacement, with the upcoming investor meeting serving as a focal point for their resistance.
