Equestrian Club Defrauded by Fake Sale of 17,000 Euros - Berlin riding school loses €17,000 in a cunning online machinery scam
A Berlin riding school has lost €17,000 in an online scam involving the sale of a wheel loader. The fraudsters posed as a lawyer and insolvency administrator, tricking the club into transferring the money without ever seeing the machine. Police warn that such cases are becoming more common, with criminals exploiting trust and urgency to steal funds.
The riding school first spotted the wheel loader listed for sale online. The seller claimed to be a law firm handling insolvency, complete with a professional website and convincing details. Before transferring the money, the club checked the firm's existence and spoke with multiple people who appeared to confirm its legitimacy.
After payment, the seller vanished. The phone number was disconnected, the website disappeared, and all attempts to contact them failed. The club never inspected the machine in person, as the seller had claimed it was located too far away.
Berlin's state criminal investigation office (LKA) has since warned of a rise in similar fraud cases. Tina Beutling, a chief detective with the LKA, advises buyers to verify a seller's identity thoroughly. She urges caution if a seller refuses inspections, avoids in-person meetings, or pressures buyers to complete the deal quickly.
Once money is transferred, criminals often move or convert it within hours, making recovery nearly impossible. Victims frequently realise the fraud too late, leaving them with no way to reclaim their losses.
The riding school's €17,000 loss was money saved over years, now gone for good. Police stress the importance of inspecting goods in person and resisting pressure to rush payments. Without swift action, the chances of recovering stolen funds remain slim.
