Schools Remain Closed Despite Power Restoration - Berlin schools remain closed after major power outage delays reopening

Schools in southwest Berlin will stay shut until at least Monday, January 12. The closures follow a widespread power outage that disrupted services across the area. Emergency childcare, however, will keep running as before.

The power failure has forced multiple schools to remain closed for the rest of the week. Among them are Johannes-Tews Elementary, Conrad Elementary, Schweizerhof Elementary, Dreilinden Elementary, and Buschgraben Elementary. Secondary schools affected include John F. Kennedy School, Droste-Hülshoff Gymnasium, Dreilinden Gymnasium, and Werner-von-Siemens Gymnasium. Private institutions like the International Montessori School Berlin, Parzival School, Sancta-Maria School, and Phorms Berlin Süd Evangelical School in Zehlendorf are also closed.

John F. Kennedy School has already confirmed it will not reopen before the end of the week. Officials there consider a return before Monday unlikely. Meanwhile, power has been fully restored in the region, but schools must pass thorough technical checks before students can return. Inspections will cover critical systems, including fire alarms, to ensure safety. Until then, emergency childcare services will continue in the same format as over the past three days.

The extended closures mean students will rely on remote support or emergency care until next Monday. Schools will only reopen once all safety inspections are complete. Parents and staff have been advised to check for updates from individual institutions.
