Class in the Subway Station - Berlin Action Shows War Reality - Berlin Subway Recreates Ukraine’s Underground Classrooms for War’s Youngest Victims
A replica classroom has appeared in Berlin’s Alexanderplatz subway station to highlight the struggles of Ukrainian children during wartime. The installation, organised by UNICEF, shows how millions of youngsters have been forced to study underground since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Schools in front-line areas remain closed or destroyed, pushing lessons into bomb shelters and metro tunnels.
The display features twelve desks, a chalkboard, and a plexiglass enclosure, mirroring the makeshift classrooms now common in Ukraine. It will stay open to the public storage until December 21. Federal Development Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan (SPD) is set to attend the opening event.
The exhibition aims to draw attention to the harsh reality faced by Ukrainian schoolchildren. By recreating a wartime classroom in central Berlin, organisers hope to remind visitors of the war’s lasting impact on education. The display will remain in place for over a week, giving the public a chance to reflect on the crisis in Ukraine.
