Driving Under the Influence of Nitrous Oxide - Police Stop 19-Year-Old in Berlin - Berlin teen arrested after inhaling nitrous oxide while speeding
A 19-year-old driver was arrested in Berlin after inhaling nitrous oxide while speeding. Police intervened following a witness report, leading to a dramatic traffic stop in Hellersdorf. Officers later discovered multiple canisters of the gas inside the vehicle.
The incident began when a witness spotted the driver behaving erratically on Leipziger Straße. Police pulled the car over but the teenager refused to cooperate. Instead, he locked the doors and remained inside.
Officers obtained a search warrant before smashing a side window to remove the driver. Inside the vehicle, they found several canisters of nitrous oxide and a balloon—commonly used for inhaling the gas. Authorities confirmed the substance was being consumed while driving.
This case follows a rising trend across Germany. Between 2024 and 2025, around 1,200 police reports involved drivers using nitrous oxide. Most incidents occurred in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria. The 19-year-old's licence was confiscated on the spot.
The arrest highlights ongoing concerns about nitrous oxide misuse behind the wheel. The driver now faces legal consequences, including the loss of driving privileges. Police continue to monitor similar cases as the issue persists nationwide.
