Berlin to Host Another Large 'Gaza Solidarity' Rally This Weekend
Berlin is set to see another large demonstration in support of Gaza this weekend, two weeks after a similar event. 'Together for Gaza', led by The Left party leaders Ines Schwerdtner and Jan van Aken, is scheduled for September 27. The rally aims to create a peaceful space for protest, free from discrimination.
The demonstration, with the motto 'Stop the genocide in Gaza!', also demands 'No weapons in war zones!' and 'Peace instead of armament racing'. However, the narrative of 'Israel's genocide' against Palestinians has been deemed controversial and potentially anti-Semitic by Felix Klein, the Federal Government's Anti-Semitism Commissioner. He considers the 'genocide' slogan an 'extremely problematic claim' often heard in left-wing circles.
Prominent figures such as Roger Waters, Dieter Hallervorden, Massiv, and Bausa are expected to attend the demonstration. The event is organised by a broad coalition of around 50 groups, including Amnesty International and Medico International. Berlin has enjoyed relative calm regarding the Middle East conflict in recent weeks, but the daily life of Jewish citizens has been significantly restricted due to anti-Israel demonstrations, according to Berlin's Anti-Semitism Commissioner Samuel Salzborn.
The upcoming demonstration aims to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza, calling for an end to violence and a peaceful resolution. While the organisers strive for a peaceful and inclusive event, concerns have been raised about the potential for anti-Semitic sentiments. The demonstration is scheduled for this Saturday at 2 pm at the Brandenburg Gate.
