Berlin to Host Europe's Largest Green Chemistry Lab
Berlin is set to become home to Europe's largest lab infrastructure for green chemistry. The Chemical Invention Factory (CIF), funded with around 20 million euros from TU Berlin and the state of Berlin, broke ground on September 24, 2025. This significant project aims to transform chemistry into a sustainable, circular economy based on renewable resources.
Spanning approximately 1000 square meters, the CIF will feature state-of-the-art analysis equipment, freely accessible to up to twelve teams from around the world. These teams, accompanied by professors serving as 'InnoDirectors', will work towards developing their research results into market-ready products. The goal is to significantly advance the transfer of innovations from science to green applications in the field of materials chemistry.
Berlin's role as a research and innovation hotspot in Europe is further cemented with this project. The CIF is expected to promote sustainable processes and materials in chemistry, contributing to the city's reputation as a hub for sustainable development.
The CIF building on the Charlottenburg campus of TU Berlin is scheduled for completion by 2027. Upon completion, it will provide a unique space for collaboration and innovation, fostering the transition to a sustainable, circular economy in the chemistry sector.
