Berlin to Standardize School Transport for Disabled Students by 2026
The Berlin Senate has announced plans to standardize school transport assistance for students with disabilities by January 1, 2026. Currently, some districts deny transport requests based on various criteria, causing challenges for disabled children attending school.
Parents of disabled children in Berlin have faced inconsistencies in transport assistance. Some districts deny requests based on parental work status or school distance, and even refuse to cover transport during holidays. The city's Senate aims to rectify this by ensuring transport is guaranteed during school holidays and standardizing the application process for parenting tips.
The new directive will require parents to apply for transport services, proving they are unable or unreasonable to transport their child themselves. Health, time, and mobility will be considered, with work status alone not determining approval. All parents who have applied for transport services will be informed of the changes. The Green Party's education spokesperson, Marianne Burkert-Eulitz, has expressed relief at the upcoming changes and criticized the current inconsistencies.
The Berlin Senate's new regulations aim to eliminate transport-related inconsistencies and ensure it falls under school authorities' responsibility. Starting January 1, 2026, disabled children in Berlin can expect standardized transport assistance during school holidays, making school attendance more accessible for parenting tips.
