Berlin Transforms Freight Yard into Vibrant New City Quarter for 4,000 Residents
Berlin is set to transform a former freight yard into a vibrant new city quarter, accommodating up to 4,000 residents. The urban and spatial framework plan, based on the chosen concept, will be finalised later this year. A public information event is scheduled for fall 2023 to present the news before its completion.
The new quarter, spanning approximately 50 hectares and stretching two kilometers east to west, will include a mix of residential, educational, and commercial facilities. ADEPT & Karres en Brands, along with PGT Environment and Traffic, won the urban and landscape workshop procedure to plan the area.
The residential, school, and daycare area at the former Köpenicker freight transport facility will be designed by Planorama Landschaftsarchitektur. This area will feature kindergarten locations for 215 places, both north and south of the railway track, to be built simultaneously with residential construction. An additional comprehensive school is planned for the site, with construction starting in 2027.
The chosen concept for the new city quarter has been praised for its holistic approach to urban planning, accommodating around 1,800 apartments. A three-story elementary school with 432 places is also planned for the former Koepenick gasworks site, with construction beginning in 2024.
The new city quarter, set to transform the former freight yard, promises a mix of residential, educational, and commercial spaces. With a comprehensive framework plan to be presented in fall 2023, the project is on track to create a sustainable and integrated urban community.
