Berlin’s 27-Hectare Project Will Transform Alt-Hohenschönhausen by 2035
A significant urban development project is set to reshape Alt-Hohenschönhausen in Berlin. Known as 27 Hectares of Opportunity, the initiative will transform a commercial-only zone into a mixed-use district. The plan includes housing, businesses, and green spaces, with strong backing from Lichtenberg’s district assembly.
The project emerged from an architectural competition, won by a joint team: ChartierDalix & serp SAS from Paris and Berlin-based GRAFT. Their design features 2,000 new homes, commercial areas, social facilities, and large green spaces. The goal is to better connect the site with nearby residential neighbourhoods as part of the broader Berlin Eastside development zone.
The 27 Hectares of Opportunity project signifies a substantial change for Alt-Hohenschönhausen. With detailed planning underway and public engagement set for December, the district is preparing for a decade-long transformation. The final result will introduce new homes, businesses, and green areas to the heart of Berlin’s Eastside.
