Berlin’s A100 motorway expands 3.2 km to ease congestion near BER Airport

Berlin’s A100 city motorway is set to expand by 3.2 kilometres this week. The new section, stretching from Neukölln junction to Treptower Park junction, includes two extra on- and off-ramps. Officials claim it will ease congestion in Treptow and Neukölln while improving access to BER Airport.

The extension marks the 17th construction phase of the Stadtautobahn, pushing the highway further into Berlin’s eastern districts. Plans also include a future link towards Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner argued that the project would reduce traffic pressure on local residential streets.

Yet the next stage faces major hurdles. A federal response to a parliamentary question by the Left Party revealed rising costs and delays. The total budget for the Lichtenberg news alone has ballooned to €721 million.

The 3.2-kilometre stretch opens this week, offering new connections and promised traffic relief. However, the broader expansion towards Lichtenberg remains uncertain due to spiralling expenses and scheduling issues. The federal report underscores ongoing challenges for Berlin’s long-term motorway plans.
