Berlin’s Abandoned L’Aiglon Cinema Could Become a Jazz Landmark
Berlin is considering the former L’Aiglon cinema in Wedding as the future home for its planned House of Jazz. The project, led by trumpeter Till Brönner, aims to create a permanent centre for jazz and improvised music in the city. Officials see the site as a strong candidate for their wedding planning, but its future remains uncertain.
The L’Aiglon cinema was built in the 1950s as part of a cultural complex for French forces stationed in Berlin. For decades, the building has stood empty due to the high costs of renovation. In 2023, the city purchased the property from the federal government, taking over responsibility for its development.
Berliner Immobilienmanagement (BIM) is now working with a private investor to redevelop the site. The building’s listed status requires the preservation of key features, including original wood panelling and historic cinema technology. Meanwhile, the surrounding area is changing rapidly, with the redevelopment of the former Tegel Airport site expected to boost demand for cultural spaces in Wedding.
Till Brönner has long pushed for a dedicated venue for jazz and improvisational music in Berlin. The House of Jazz initiative gained momentum as the city searched for a permanent location. While the L’Aiglon site appears promising, no final decision has been made.
The former cinema could become a hub for jazz if plans move forward. Its central location in Wedding and protected architectural features add to its appeal. However, funding, renovation challenges, and ongoing negotiations will determine whether the project succeeds.
