Parliament Decides Against Law for Less Advertising - Berlin’s Ad-Free Movement Launches Petition to Ban Public Commercials
A Berlin-based campaign to restrict outdoor advertising is moving forward with a citizens' petition. The group Berlin werbefrei (Advertising-Free Berlin) plans to launch its signature drive on January 9, 2023. Their goal is a binding referendum to ban digital commercial ads in public spaces and tighten regulations on traditional billboards.
The initiative first proposed its measures to the state parliament but failed to secure support. After the parliamentary review period ended on December 13, 2022, organisers announced the next step: a citizens' drive. To force a referendum, they must gather signatures from at least seven percent of eligible voters within four months.
The signature drive will determine whether the issue reaches a public vote. If successful, the referendum would let Berliners decide on stricter advertising rules. The court challenge over cost estimates may still affect the timeline for gathering support.
