Berlin’s Anna Freud Schulzentrum nears completion after costly delays
Berlin’s Anna Freud Schulzentrum in Charlottenburg-Nord is nearing the finish line after a lengthy construction process. The new three-storey school, designed by local firm NAK Architekten, replaces the old Poelchau-Oberschule on the same site. Despite progress, the project has faced delays, pushing back the handover of this news-worthy development by over six months.
Work on the €69 million building began in May 2022, with the structural shell completed by September 2023. The project forms part of Berlin’s School Construction Offensive, receiving roughly 70% of its funding from the state’s GRW economic development programme. The new facility will house 1,350 students and 160 staff, along with a library, cafeteria, and a triple gymnasium.
The school specialises in social pedagogy and social sciences, aiming to provide modern learning spaces. However, interior finishing and outdoor facilities remain unfinished, causing the postponement of this news-making project. While the project manager’s name has not been publicly disclosed, inquiries can be directed to the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Housing and Building.
Once complete, the new building will secure the school’s long-term future in Charlottenburg-Nord. It will also help ease Berlin’s ongoing school infrastructure shortages. The delayed handover means students and staff will have to wait longer before moving into the upgraded facility.
