Transport Senator Supports Third BER Runway - Berlin’s BER Airport Eyes Third Runway and Relaxed Night Flight Rules
Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) could see significant changes if new proposals come to fruition. Berlin Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) is advocating for a third runway and more lenient night flight rules. She contends that these moves would enhance the airport's appeal to airlines and passengers.
BER currently functions under stringent night flight bans between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. The rules differ based on aircraft type and flight operations, but even minor delays can necessitate rerouting. Bonde posits that this inflexibility impedes the airport's efficiency and competitiveness.
To mitigate the restrictions, she proposes allowing each airline up to five late-night landings annually. This change, she believes, would minimize disruptions and bolster service reliability. However, Brandenburg's state government—one of BER's co-owners alongside Berlin and the federal government—has thus far rebuffed any relaxation of the current rules.
In addition to night flight adjustments, Bonde is championing a third runway. She asserts that the expansion would attract more airlines and flights to the capital region. Nevertheless, no definitive plans for the new runway have been finalized.
The proposals encounter resistance from Brandenburg's government, which holds a stake in BER. Without its backing, any alterations to night flight rules or runway plans remain uncertain. For the time being, the airport continues to operate under the existing constraints.
