Berlin’s Bold Bid for 2035 World Expo Aims to Transform the City
A Berlin-based association is campaigning for the city to host the 2035 World Expo. Global Goals Berlin argues the event could drive sustainable development and social progress. The group envisions the former Tegel Airport as the main event site, complete with national pavilions and floating wooden islands.
The World Expo traditionally highlights a country’s innovation and economic power. Economist Jochen Wermuth, an advisor to the association, believes the event could help Germany reclaim global market leadership. Meanwhile, the Berlin Senate has not yet passed a resolution on the bid, focusing instead on its Olympic ambitions.
The bid remains unofficial without Senate backing. If approved, the Expo could bring economic and social changes to Berlin. The former Tegel Airport site and local pavilions would form the core of the proposed event.
