Berlin’s Bold Maglev Plan Could Revolutionize Urban Transit by 2035
Berlin's Transport Senator Ute Bonde has proposed an ambitious plan to integrate magnetic levitation (maglev) trains into the city's transport network. This comes after the federal coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD included maglev in the Municipal Transport Financing Act, boosting its prospects.
Bonde envisions a multi-faceted maglev network for Berlin. She suggests a route from the former International Congress Center (ICC) to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), which could reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion. Additionally, Bonde proposes a ring line between the S-Bahn and city limits, and a feeder line to connect to it. However, the exact location of the first maglev line remains unspecified.
Maglev's autonomous operation, quietness, and cost-effectiveness have attracted Bonde's attention. She believes it could benefit logistics by reducing heavy truck traffic into the city. This proposal aligns with her vision for Berlin's 2035 mobility plan, which she aims to present this autumn.
Bonde's plans have sparked debate and support from various political figures. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner previously suggested using maglev to connect outer districts better. In November 2023, CDU parliamentary group leader Dirk Stettner proposed a multi-kilometer maglev pilot route through central Berlin. Now, maglev will receive the same funding treatment as trams and subways, allowing for fair comparisons in feasibility studies.
Berlin's maglev plans are gaining momentum, with Senator Bonde's vision for a comprehensive network and the federal coalition's support. The exact routes and timelines remain to be determined, but maglev's potential to transform Berlin's transport landscape is clear. As the city looks towards 2035, maglev could play a significant role in its mobility future.
