Berlin’s bold new hub merges housing, queer culture and community care under one roof
A new building is set to rise at Berolinastraße 9–11 in Berlin-Mitte, scheduled for completion by January 2026. This structure will break ground in more ways than one, combining housing, care, culture, and counseling in an innovative, inclusive framework.
The building, a joint project between WBM and RuT Berlin gGmbH, will offer 72 affordable apartments. Half of these will be subsidized, with rents set at around €7 per square meter. It will also house a queer sociocultural center and shared living arrangements for lesbian women.
The ground floor will feature a versatile event hall, a welcoming neighborhood café, and counseling rooms dedicated to the LSBTIQ+ community. RuT Berlin plans to establish outpatient care services within the building, reflecting its commitment to social engagement and community work. Despite its progressive ethos, the building's exterior design has been criticized for lacking originality and boldness.
The new building at Berolinastraße 9–11 is set to provide affordable housing and a range of community services, all under one roof. Despite mixed reviews on its exterior design, its inclusive approach to construction is a significant step forward for Berlin-Mitte.
