Cemeteries Remain Closed Due to Ice Hazard - Berlin's cemeteries close temporarily due to icy weather risks
Berlin's icy weather has forced the temporary closure of many cemeteries across the city. The Evangelical Cemetery Association of Berlin-Mitte, which manages over 40 sites, announced the decision to protect visitors from unsafe conditions. The affected locations will remain shut over the weekend.
The closures cover cemeteries in a dozen districts, including Pankow, Mitte, Reinickendorf, and Neukölln. Other areas like Tiergarten, Wedding, Friedrichshain, and Kreuzberg are also impacted. Authorities confirmed that safe access could not be guaranteed due to ice and snow.
Funerals will proceed as usual, though none were scheduled for the weekend. Maintenance crews have been working to clear essential paths, but the vast grounds make full winter upkeep difficult. The cemeteries are expected to reopen on Monday once conditions improve.
The decision aims to prevent accidents on slippery paths and icy surfaces. Visitors planning to pay respects or attend services should check for updates before travelling. Normal operations will resume once the weather allows safe access.
