Berlin’s election debate reveals public sector tensions amid no-shows from major parties

The first political debate before Berlin’s state parliamentary election was held at the Verdi trade union headquarters. Only two candidates attended: Werner Graf from the Greens and Elif Eralp from the Left Party. Absent were representatives from the SPD and CDU, which frustrated union members in the audience.

During the event, Verdi reiterated its demand for a 7% wage rise or an extra €300 monthly for public sector workers. Graf argued that higher pay would make state jobs more appealing and help fill long-standing vacancies. He highlighted the struggle to recruit staff in essential services.

The debate exposed deep concerns over public sector funding and working conditions. Verdi’s wage demands remain unmet, while staff shortages and budget pressures continue. The absence of major party candidates left many questions unanswered ahead of the election.
