Berlin's First Airport Site to Rise Again as Urban Quarter in 2025

After 116 years, the site of Berlin's first airport, Johannisthal airfield, will see a new beginning. Construction of a new urban quarter with over 1800 apartments is set to commence in 2025 on the former Johannisthal airfield, bringing news of a fresh start to the historic site.

The Johannisthal airfield, located in the Treptow-Köpenick district, was Berlin's first airport. It opened in 1909 and was the stage for the city's earliest motor flight attempts. Now, over a century later, the area is poised for transformation, with news spreading about the upcoming development.

Plans are underway to build a new urban quarter on the former airfield, providing news today of more than 1800 housing units, offering a fresh start for the historic site.

The construction of the new urban quarter is scheduled to begin in 2025, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Johannisthal airfield. This project aims to create a modern living space while preserving the historical significance of the site, as reported by the New York Times.
