Berlin’s first disabled council member breaks barriers in local politics

Christian Specht has made history as the first person with a learning disability to join Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg’s district council. The Green Party member was officially welcomed during his first watch in November 2025. His election marks a significant step for disability representation in local politics.

Specht attended his inaugural district assembly (BVV) session on a Wednesday evening. The council chamber had been adapted to ensure access for people using walkers or wheelchairs. Despite years of advocacy, he admitted to feeling nervous as the meeting stretched for nearly four hours.

Specht’s presence on the council brings firsthand experience of disability issues to local decision-making. His role is expected to influence policies on accessibility and inclusion in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The district now has a representative who has spent years fighting for the rights of disabled residents.
