Broom and Shower Gel - Gift Packs for the Homeless - Berlin’s Grassroots Initiative Transforms Lives of People Without Homes

A small community initiative in Berlin has grown into a major effort to support people without homes. Started in 2024 by Kladow resident Dunja Kuhlmey, the project now delivers carefully packed care packages to those in need. Each year, the initiative expands, with more volunteers and better supplies for recipients.

The idea began modestly in 2024, when 50 shoebox-sized packages were collected and handed out during a bingo event at the Franciscan Order in Pankow. Each package had a €15 budget and contained store-bought food for longer shelf life. Hygiene items, clothing, and small essentials were also included, with separate packages prepared for men and women.

The care package initiative has grown from a local project to a city-wide effort. With higher budgets, more volunteers, and expanded supplies, it now reaches hundreds of people each Christmas. Organisers continue to seek support to keep the programme running for years to come.
